Yesterday I went to do 针灸 for my gassy stomach. The doc put 2 needles somewhere below my knees and another 3 in a triangular formation at my stomach. Then got a heat radiator above my stomach. After the whole thing he casually commented that something's not right about my legs when I lay down. He said normal people will have their legs like that when they lie down.

But mine is like that.

He said some particular muscle around my butt is very weak, the name I couldn't get cos' he said it in Chinese. After which he told me to avoid doing 3 things:

1) swim frog-style (which I can't!)
2) do taekwondo (which I don't!)
3) sit cross legged (omg for the hours of Buddhist talks and meditations I sat like that)

I left wondering if all frogstyle swimmers, taekwondo practitioners and Buddhists in S'pore thus suffer the same problem. So much for karma haha. Can you try out and tell me if mine is really an anomaly???
So much for staying away from teaching, today Ms Pear called me and asked if I could do relief for 2 weeks at Dunman. I couldn't say no. I'll be there till 12 August, come visit the school!
So PSC gave out a record-breaking 84 scholarships this year. Let's look at the breakdown of the various JCs.

RJC - 39
HCI - 15
ACS(I) - 6
DHS - 5
TJC - 5
NJC - 4
VJC - 3
ACJC - 2
NUS High - 2
AJC - 1
CJC - 1
JJC - 1

5 out of a cohort of 126, not bad at all! Hope the subsequent batches of juniors can do as well or even better!

School attachment has ended. After listening to the experience of the rest I conclude mine's probably one of the most fruitless. It's a busy month and people didn't really want to do anything with us. And I can't stand old female educators who think they have the rights to be arrogant, where's the love? Meanwhile I'll stay away from teaching till I get to NIE, there's more to explore.

I just tried reading a few pages of an adapted version of 水浒传 but I know I'm going to lose it soon. Did that with 三国演义 the other time and the same thing happened. I think I figured out the reason - my brain can't process the appearance of multiple characters! I'm an impatient reader, I hate getting lost and having to flip front and back for the who's who. Probably the same thing with Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings? Why would I enjoy such confusing things with so many people who aren't even real. I'll stick to simpler pleasures.

Sometimes we forget that our mother tongue makes us accessible to things beyond entertainment. Information sources in Chinese can be useful too! 浪漫的逃亡 is written by Mayday's 阿信 and is meant to be an alternative travel guide to Japan. I just received by post 我的阿拉伯狂想, thanks to Zhuanxin who sent it to me from Taiwan. It's written by 小光, who used to be on 大学生了没. He's the most intellectual out of the lot and I liked his sharing, so I began to follow his blog and got to know about his book.

He's an Arabic language major from 政治大学, the uni where 陈绮贞 and most of 苏打绿 came from. He went on a 1-year exchange programme to Kuwait and during the stay he toured the surrounding Arab states, and the experiences make up the content of the book. Though I've yet to read it, I'd think this book is significant in itself cos' it bridges young Chinese readers to a foreign culture which many may find irrelevant. It's a good start to stir interest in amateurs before they move into deeper explorations on their own.

I find people like him inspiring - willing to be different and take risks, yet remain humble and passionate to share experiences with others. Now the risk I'm taking is going to France, I hope this book will give me ideas on how to approach a different culture open-mindedly.

You know some statues of the Buddha depict him as someone fat and Chinese, just like the people at RT? Personally I don't really take to such depictions, cos' from written records Buddha's a handsome man who's skilled in archery, horseriding and anything he attempted to learn. And none of these qualities are reflected in statues like those. Irked, I shared my thoughts with my sis and mum. My sis then said she prefers statues like that cos' they are cute, and my mum said "又肥又开心,看了也会开心". Their replies were enlightening in a way; they reminded me that people had different ways of seeing the world and interpreting things and that's why so many forms of religions exist to cater to the variety of spiritual needs of human beings. I'm happy if you're happy and non-evangelistic.

Seems like this song made an impact on quite a few during the concert! I'll go anyhow play a harmonica beside River Seine and find the corner where she dropped the apples when I'm there.

When I talk to friends from Accountancy Business Communications Pharmacy Medicine etc I get to learn so much about the outside world. What's going on in the industry, insider knowledge - interesting stuff though not fully comprehensible at times. Then I'll realise I've no such chunks of info to give in return as a Social Science student. Which can be scary cos' I can just choose to study and subsequently teach Geography without knowing anything else at all and be a really uninformed teacher whom I'll disrespect. Then who am I as an educator to prepare my students for the outside world? Yep, so I really appreciate what my friends share with me. Thank you! =)

答案是。。。孙燕姿2009年世界巡回演唱会

I matured with her songs, I admire the Rafflesian I see in her though I admit I haven't been enthu about her since her one-year hiatus. Still I decided to go for this concert, cos' she's THE singer whose songs I know best and I may grow out of this stuff anytime. She panted very loudly after her first 2 segments - I wasn't sure if that's being unprofessional (imagine Cheer Chen panting!). But I guess such candour is part of the reason why so many of us love her - the Singaporeanness of her resonates with us very well. The most delicious segment of the night was when she came out in a floating GONGGONG!

She was sitting on the flesh playing the piano. I'm grateful for the company I went with, we stood and jumped when her fast tracks were on and probably the sheer number of us kept the cursing of the row behind us unmanifested haha. What 超快感 do you get from being sedate at a concert? Hope she steps up her pace after this concert I want to continue supporting her.

First jump 216. Second jump 216. On the dot pass! After that I got rather stressed out for 2.4, why if I fail running and waste all the jumping effort! Happy la, 60 hours of RT in total in exchange for $9.50 X 20 + $100 incentive. Every cent counts when one isn't working haha.
This summer I'm glad to have found new things to appreciate. For the sense of hearing there's Sodagreen. For the sense of sight, Haruki Murakami's novels. For the sense of taste -

OMG GONGGONG. Dinner buddy Shaun introduced the dish at Changi Village. I was of course apprehensive cos' my stomach's weak and oysters and their relatives don't really excite me. But gonggong is different. Before entering the mouth you already get satisfaction from strategically picking out the flesh from the shell. Then inside the mouth it tastes like crab in the form of rubbery squid. Plus the accompanying sauce and chilli. I feel like trying gonggongs from all the tze char stalls in SG.

A teacher from Dunman High shared this video today at the teaching attachment briefing. If you were touched by "Departures" you would like this as well. It's about an inspiring educator and the values he teaches the young kids.
