I had with me a National Geographic travel guide in Thailand. It featured Loei Province, and it mentioned that if one wants to be the only tourist somewhere in Thailand, one can try going to Loei. So there, I took a bus from Udon Thani to Loei. The ride took 3 hours and it was 70 baht.
Though Thailand is the most developed among all the countries I have visited during this trip, it also has the oldest fleets of buses around. You see buses like the above even in Bangkok zipping past Siam Paragon.
In Loei, there is only one guesthouse to go to for the backpacker, and that is Sugar Guest House. It's a 10-min tuktuk ride from the bus terminal, 5-min walk to the city centre. Single room at 180 baht a night. There is an Internet cafe nearby which closes at 10pm.
The riverfront in the city centre.
The night market.
A disused bridge.
Skip this province if the objective of your trip is to visit famous attractions and to have great fun. But if you want to explore a relatively unknown place/don't feel like seeing mass tourists for a few days, this is the place for you. For me, spending two days here was therapeutic.
